Ingredients:

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 8 thick slices Challah or Brioche bread
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish or a large rimmed sheet pan with melted butter.
  2. Arrange the 8 thick slices of Challah or Brioche bread in a single layer. Make sure they are snug but not overlapping.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, maple syrup, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until the mixture is completely smooth.
  4. Pour the custard evenly over the bread slices.
  5. Use a spatula to gently press the bread down. Ensure every corner is fully saturated so you don't end up with dry white spots.
  6. Place the pan on the center rack of the oven.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the edges are mahogany colored and the centers feel firm to the touch.
  8. Remove from the oven and let it sit for 5 minutes before slicing or serving to let the custard finish setting.
